Rajyasree Sen,

The Memsahib

Rajyasree Sen, the memsahib of Brown Sahib is a first generation restaurateur. Born and brought up in Calcutta, Rajyasree is a bon vivant who prides herself on cooking up fabulous meals for her friends. Born into a family where every meal was a celebration – with lunch always being an elaborate Bengali meal and dinner being a smorgasbord of European delights, Rajyasree had always harboured the desire to start her own restaurant. It was only after earning a much-needed livelihood while working in the media, that she finally found herself in a position to start her long-cherished restaurant.

Having noticed the absence of authentic Bengali food in Delhi and seeing it relished by her guests at dinners she served at home, she has finally been able to put her money where her mouth is and start her own restaurant. Brown Sahib richly borrows from her life and family in Calcutta - from the manner in which the food is served, to the menu to the logo and decor.

The restaurant is like an extension of her home in Calcutta  - from the food which is traditional Bengali cuisine and Anglo-Indian trademark dishes which she grew up on in Calcutta, to the art on the wall to the furnishings used to the artefacts adorning the walls –  the entire experience of Brown Sahib should hopefully leave guests with the feeling that they have entered an elegant, hospitable, traditional Bengali home which celebrates food and the finer things in life.
